BFL 75/Silk 25 (Top)
BFL 75/Silk 25 (Top)
75% Blue-faced Leicester wool / 25% Tussah silk Very clean combed top. Staple length around 6 to 7 inches. A super-soft blend in a luminous, pearly-looking ivory white. The sort of fibre you want to fall asleep on, it's so soft. Absolutely perfect for against-the-skin garments. Or perhaps a lace shawl since this ought to make fantastic lace yarn. From Ashland Bay, this replaces our previous 80/20 blend.

Cultivated Silk Cocoons, Degummed
Cultivated Silk Cocoons, Degummed
Silk cocoons come as natural (usually with a dead worm inside), which are sort of firm and egg-shaped, or degummed, which have had the seracin (i.e. silk worm spit/glue) removed. Most common are Bombyx (Cultivated, Mulberry) cocoons, but sometimes other kinds of silk are available as well, though we have yet to locate a source. Cocoons are adored by makers of Novelty/Art yarn, by felters, and sometimes by spinners. Degummed Bombyx or Mulberry/Cultivated silk cocoons. These can be used for spinning directly, as a textural component in needle or Nuno felting, in paper making or added for texture to novelty yarns. They dye up just like regular silk top or roving, using either acid or fibre reactive dyes. PRODUCT of CHINA

Flaxen Silk Natural – 1-Lb Value Pack
Flaxen Silk Natural – 1-Lb Value Pack
65% Silk / 35% Linen. Lace weight, 2-ply. Approximately 115g (4.06 oz), 691m (756yd). Gauge: because of the open work in lace knitting, gauge is seldom given for lace weight yarns. Follow your pattern recommendations for best results. Laundering: Handwash cool, dry flat. John has only played around with this base a couple of times. It has a linen feel to the hand but with some lustre from the silk, in an ivory-beige shade. A good choice for summer shawls or other non-wool lace projects. The natural colour is a greyed ivory. Fibre reactive dyes might be the best choice for this yarn, but we've also tried acid dyes with good results. Just bear in mind that the linen component will not strike with the dye, so copious rinsing will have to be done. We found this needs a couple of days to hang and dry thoroughly before reskeining or winding, or it has a tendency to snag on the swift and break. PRODUCT of CANADA Price for 4 skeins, approximately 115g each. A 15% savings on our regular price.

Merino 80/Silk 20 – Vanilla
Merino 80/Silk 20 – Vanilla
80% Merino wool (22-micron) / 20% Mulberry (Cultivated) Silk Combed top, very clean. Staple length is around 5 to 6 inches, the colour is creamy-white with lustrous streaks of silk. This is the same fibre blend that we also list as Ashford Merino/Silk Vanilla. It's soft and fluffy as a cloud and a true delight to spin. Whether you go for a thin lace spin or much thicker (even chunky novelty yarn) it won't fail to please. For years we thought the silk was Tussah silk, but indeed it turns out to be Mulberry. This dyes up beautifully with acid dyes. Be gentle if you dye it as top, since the Merino could easily felt. PRODUCT of NEW ZEALAND
