The Fibre Garden : Natural Yarns - Lace weight
Showing all 6 results
We love lace weight yarns! Alan enjoys the challenge of lace knitting, and John really loves dyeing the stuff so it’s a win-win around our place. Many of our customers are experienced lace yarn spinners and knitters and others are intrigued but waiting for the right moment.
With lace weight yarns a gauge is not generally given. This is because the open stitchwork and the types of projects (shawls, scarves) are more relaxed in their sizing requirements than, say, a fitted sweater. When in doubt, consult your pattern.
Natural Yarns - Lace weight
Casual Cashmere Lace – 1-Lb Value Pack
80% Superwash Merino wool / 10% Cashmere / 10% Nylon. Lace weight, 2-ply.
Approximately 115g (4.06 oz), 525m (575yd).
Gauge: because of the open work in lace knitting, gauge is seldom given for lace weight yarns. Follow your pattern recommendations for best results.
Laundering: Handwash cool, dry flat.
A "thickish" lace weight yarn, and even at only 10% the cashmere shines through in the super-soft hand. Perfect for shawls, scarves, cowls and so forth. We haven't worked with this yet, so we're not sure how much it will bloom during knitting/dyeing/rinsing but it will likely get a bit of a halo yet not enough to hide your fancy stitches.
This yarn takes dye beautifully, whether you are using acid dyes, food colouring, Kool-aid or even natural dyes. Just bear in mind that Superwash yarn blends strike with acid dyes so quickly that it can be very tricky to get a decent solid tone. Use that to your advantage like we do, to get interesting semi-solids or go crazy with hand painting.

Flaxen Silk Natural – 1-Lb Value Pack
65% Silk / 35% Linen. Lace weight, 2-ply.
Approximately 115g (4.06 oz), 691m (756yd).
Gauge: because of the open work in lace knitting, gauge is seldom given for lace weight yarns. Follow your pattern recommendations for best results.
Laundering: Handwash cool, dry flat.
John has only played around with this base a couple of times. It has a linen feel to the hand but with some lustre from the silk, in an ivory-beige shade. A good choice for summer shawls or other non-wool lace projects. The natural colour is a greyed ivory.
Fibre reactive dyes might be the best choice for this yarn, but we've also tried acid dyes with good results. Just bear in mind that the linen component will not strike with the dye, so copious rinsing will have to be done. We found this needs a couple of days to hang and dry thoroughly before reskeining or winding, or it has a tendency to snag on the swift and break.

Lace Time Natural – 1-Lb Value Pack
100% Superwash Merino wool. Lace weight, 2-ply.
Approximately 115g (4.06 oz), 885m (968yd).
Gauge: because of the open work in lace knitting, gauge is seldom given for lace weight yarns. Follow your pattern recommendations for best results.
Laundering: Machine wash cool, tumble dry on low, hang or dry flat.
The same base yarn we use for our Lace Time™ line. The spin is smooth and soft. While at first it might seem strange to choose Superwash Merino for a fine lace shawl, it's a good choice if you are knitting for others and don't know about their laundering decisions. Because of the superwash wool this is not suitable for felting.

Just bear in mind that Superwash yarn strikes with acid dyes so quickly that it can be very tricky to get a decent solid tone. Use that to your advantage like we do, to get interesting semi-solids or go crazy with hand painting. We highly recommend this yarn to first-time dyers!
