Flaxen Silk Natural – skein
Flaxen Silk Natural – skein
65% Silk / 35% Linen. Lace weight, 2-ply. Approximately 115g (4.06 oz), 691m (756yd). Gauge: because of the open work in lace knitting, gauge is seldom given for lace weight yarns. Follow your pattern recommendations for best results. Laundering: Handwash cool, dry flat. John has only played around with this base a couple of times. It has a linen feel to the hand but with some lustre from the silk, in an ivory-beige shade. A good choice for summer shawls or other non-wool lace projects. The natural colour is a greyed ivory. Fibre reactive dyes might be the best choice for this yarn, but we've also tried acid dyes with good results. Just bear in mind that the linen component will not strike with the dye, so copious rinsing will have to be done. We found this needs a couple of days to hang and dry thoroughly before reskeining or winding, or it has a tendency to snag on the swift and break. PRODUCT of CANADA Price per skein. Approximately 115g.

Flick Card, Ashford
Flick Card, Ashford
Canadian orders only. Made of solid unfinished Silver Beech hardwood with a comfortable turned handle with ridges to fit the hand. The carding cloth is durable stainless steel wire teeth set at 72 points per square inch (ppsi), held by a red rubber backing. Carding head measures 4" by 2.5". An excellent value tool. Easily finished with a coat of urethane or varnish, if desired.

A flick carder (or "flicker") is used to open up locks of fleece before drum carding or spinning. Many spinners sit and do this on their lap, with a protective cloth of sturdy denim or leather. We prefer doing it on a high table on top of a piece of old vinyl flooring.

Fustic, Shavings
Fustic, Shavings
Shavings from Chlorophora tinctoria often called Old Fustic. Use on protein or cellulose fibres. Requires a premordant. A classic dye that gives bright yellows through to gold or green, depending on the mordant. Use at 30-50% WOF for medium to strong shades. TO USE: soak in water overnight to several days. Simmer 1 hour in soaking liquid. Cool, strain then simmer premordanted fibre for 30-60 minutes. Temperatures of 155-160°F will give the best yellows. Light and washfastness: good to excellent with a mordant.

Glauber’s salt
Glauber’s salt
Sodium sulphate. Used as a LEVELLER in both synthetic and natural dyeing. Glauber's salt slows down the colour uptake of the dye, encouraging more even and level strike. This is particularly useful when dyeing soft pastel shades. TO USE: Calculate amount required for 10 to 50% WOF (weight of fibre), lower amounts for softer shades, higher amounts for deeper colours. Dissolve in hot water and add in stages during dyeing, as the bath temperature rises but before dye strikes. Dispose of spent dyebath in your usual way. Down the drain is fine. CAUTION: wear a mask when handling powders.

Gotland – Grey (Top)
Gotland – Grey (Top)
Classification: LONGWOOL Combed top, very clean. This breed originated on the Island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea and is widely raised in Sweden. It features lustrous and silky fibre, our supply being a blend of medium brown and creamy grey. Most often used for outerwear. Micron count for Gotland is in the 48 to 52 range (though ours seems softer), with a staple length from 3 to 5 inches, relatively short for a Longwool. Felting properties are excellent.

Hackles
Hackle, Majacraft – 2 row 320mm
FREE GROUND SHIPPING within Canada. Canadian orders only. Double pitch hackle from Majacraft, 320 mm (12.6") comb width. The combs have stainless steel pins with polished points that are blunt enough to be much more pleasant to use and sharp enough to do the job well. Fibres are lashed on to the teeth and then pulled through a diz to prepare them into top for spinning. They can be used in much the same way as wool combs, for either preparing a single type of fibre, blending colours or blending a mixture of fibres. Instead of drilling the hackle base, Majacraft has developed a new technique of bonding the pins in with a very tough resin. The pins are positioned perfectly straight and perfectly even on every hackle. This is the double row version, and we can order in the single row as well, just inquire for current pricing and availability. It includes a wooden pin cover to protect you and the hackle when it is not in use. Also included are special Majacraft clamps. The clamp block is drilled at an angle and has a solid rubber top to ensure that the hackle is held firmly on your table and the rubber will prevent damage to the table. The clamps allow you to secure the hackle to a sturdy surface and carry out colour blending in conjunction with a diz. The hackle is also stepped at the end to provide an area to use an 'F' clamp if you prefer this to the included clamps. The hackle dimensions are: length, 470mm (18.5 inches) width, 45mm (1.8 inches) height, 35mm (1.4 inches) comb width, 320mm (12.6 inches) The double row hackle is great for finer fibres. The pins are at different heights so initial combing can be done on the higher pins before carrying out fine combing with both rows of pins. As is often the case, the time spent in preparation is taken from the time spent in spinning later.

Handcards, Ashford – 108 PPSI
Handcards, Ashford – 108 PPSI
Canadian orders only. Price per set of two cards. Fine handcards that will handle the very fine fibres such as Alpaca or cotton. For "average" fibres (such as most breeds of wool) we recommend the other Ashford carders with 72 ppsi.

Made of solid unfinished Silver Beech hardwood with a comfortable turned handle to fit the hand. The carding cloth is durable stainless steel wire teeth set at 108 points per square inch (ppsi), held by a red rubber backing. Carding head measures 8" by 5". The paddles have a nice curve to them, which makes for more comfortable and efficient carding. Minor assembly required, basically laying a strip of white glue and screwing on the two handles. Easily finished with a coat of urethane or varnish, if desired.

Handcards are used for preparing fibre for spinning or felting. Many spinners use these to prepare washed fleece into puffy rolags. Excellent for blending together different kinds and/or colours of fibre as well. When carding fleece it's good to do this over top of a drop sheet since lots of loose vegetation may fall out during the process, depending on the fibre.

Handcards, Ashford – Small 72 PPSI
Handcards, Ashford – Small 72 PPSI
Canadian orders only. Price per set of two cards. A smaller version of the popular hand cards, ideal for felters wanting to blend colours or different fibres, or for spinners that only occasionally card fibre or fleece. We would recommend the standard-sized cards to spinners that card fleece regularly. With 72 teeth (points) per square inch (PPSI) these are suitable for carding most grades of wool and other fibres, and especially so if you are blending fibres or colours that have already been made into roving or top. Made of solid natural (unfinished) Silver Beech hardwood with a comfortable turned handle to fit the hand. The carding cloth is durable stainless steel wire teeth set at 72 points per square inch (PPSI), held by a red rubber backing. Carding head measures 7.5" by 3.5", about the same width as standard carders but not as deep. The paddles have a nice curve to them, which makes for more comfortable and efficient carding. Minor assembly required, basically laying a strip of white glue and screwing on the two handles. Easily finished with a coat of urethane or varnish, if desired. PRODUCT of NEW ZEALAND

Hemp – Bleached (Top)
Hemp – Bleached (Top)
100% Hemp. This is beautiful stuff, the finest hemp we have ever seen and a local lady with a lot of experience spinning hemp tried it and agrees! If you want to dye your hemp fibre, this bleached version will give you nice, clear and bright colours. Very clean combed top, bleached to an off-white. Staple length is 6 to 7 inches. Hemp is a bast (stem) fibre from a very tall plant, essentially a strain of marijuana developed for fibre instead of other uses. Spun in a manner much like flax, the two also share the attribute of being harsh at first and just getting better and better over time with wear and laundering. It can be spun all by itself or blended with wool and other fibres. This has a light characteristic hemp scent but it's not overwhelming and should not be offensive to the nose during spinning. Since this is a plant or cellulose fibre dyers must use fibre reactive dyes. Natural dyers must resort to techniques used on cotton, such as alum-tannin premordanting, or Aluminum acetate. Hemp also works well in an indigo vat. PRODUCT of CHINA
