Drum Carder, Louet – Junior Extra Fine – Pre-order only

Formerly called the Roving Carder Junior. If you card fibres occasionally or card for small projects, this may be the carder for you. It has the same carding cloth and solid construction as the Standard Drumcarder, but is only 4" wide. It is perfect to use to card fibers for small projects like for socks, hats and scarves or for felting. You can produce a 4" wide batt that can be spun from when you remove the batt from the carder. The batt that is created is the size of a commercial roving. You can also thoroughly blend colors on this model. It is a great introduction to the world of drum carding.
The Junior Carder has a standard extra-fine cloth (72 teeth per square inch), suitable for a wide range of fibres. This carder includes a doffer brush, doffer pin and two table clamps to clamp it onto a sturdy table as well as an instruction manual written by well known author and fiber artist Deb Menz.
Louet Drumcarders are made of laminated birch and have a hard white coating. The drums of this carder are 19cm (7-1/2") wide. In order to ensure a long life, the teeth on all Louet carders are made of high grade plated steel wire. All gearboxes (except for the Elite drumcarder) are enclosed to prevent fibres from entering the gear system.
For drumcarders it is common to mention the gear ratio that drives the licker-in when you rotate the large drum. For this drumcarder it is 3.8:1. However, what really counts for carding is the ratio of the surface speed of both drums. You get this by multiplying the gear ratio with the ratio of the diameters of the large drum and the licker-in, therefore, the surface speed ratio is 12:1 for the Roving Carder.
WEIGHT 13 Lbs (6kg).

Handcards, Louet – Regular 46 PPSI
Price per set of two cards. All-purpose handcards that will handle the majority of fibres. For very fine fibres such as Alpaca or cotton, we recommend finer handcards.
Made of unfinished hardwood. Medium carding cloth with zinc-plated teeth set at 46 points per square inch (PPSI). Teeth are 10mm high (3/8"). The paddles have a nice curve to them, which makes for more comfortable and efficient carding. Already assembled. NOTE Louet calls these hand cards REGULAR. Compared to other brands such as Ashford, the carding cloth is closer to what others in the industry might call coarse.
Handcards are used for preparing fibre for spinning or felting. Many spinners use these to prepare washed fleece into puffy rolags. Excellent for blending together different kinds and/or colours of fibre as well. When carding fleece it's good to do this over top of a drop sheet since lots of loose vegetation may fall out during the process, depending on the fibre.

Hackle, Majacraft – 2 row 320mm
FREE GROUND SHIPPING within Canada. Canadian orders only.
Double pitch hackle from Majacraft, 320 mm (12.6") comb width. The combs have stainless steel pins with polished points that are blunt enough to be much more pleasant to use and sharp enough to do the job well. Fibres are lashed on to the teeth and then pulled through a diz to prepare them into top for spinning. They can be used in much the same way as wool combs, for either preparing a single type of fibre, blending colours or blending a mixture of fibres.
Instead of drilling the hackle base, Majacraft has developed a new technique of bonding the pins in with a very tough resin. The pins are positioned perfectly straight and perfectly even on every hackle.
This is the double row version, and we can order in the single row as well, just inquire for current pricing and availability. It includes a wooden pin cover to protect you and the hackle when it is not in use. Also included are special Majacraft clamps. The clamp block is drilled at an angle and has a solid rubber top to ensure that the hackle is held firmly on your table and the rubber will prevent damage to the table. The clamps allow you to secure the hackle to a sturdy surface and carry out colour blending in conjunction with a diz. The hackle is also stepped at the end to provide an area to use an 'F' clamp if you prefer this to the included clamps.
The hackle dimensions are:
length, 470mm (18.5 inches)
width, 45mm (1.8 inches)
height, 35mm (1.4 inches)
comb width, 320mm (12.6 inches)
The double row hackle is great for finer fibres. The pins are at different heights so initial combing can be done on the higher pins before carrying out fine combing with both rows of pins. As is often the case, the time spent in preparation is taken from the time spent in spinning later.

Majacraft's description:
"The blending board is a tool for producing finely controlled rolags for spinning and batts for felting. We have used 72 TPI cloth that measures 210mm (8.3") wide by 300mm long (11.8")."
"The Majacraft boards have several extra features to set them apart. The cloth is securely bonded to the board and we have added caps to the each end of the cloth the ensures the cloth will not pick up as well as producing a very tidy finish with no frayed or cut ends. Each board has an elegant metal handle that is both attractive and sturdy. We have also used metal Majacraft badges like those included with the spinning wheels. A brush to help draft your fibre and dowels to roll rolags from the board for spinning are also included."
