The Fibre Garden : Felting Fibres & Embellishments

Many of our fibres listed under “Dyed Roving & Top” and “Natural Roving & Top” are ideal for felting. In this category we focus on smaller packs — something we find many felters here in the shop are after. We also carry Prefelt fabric, which is a terrific time-saving base or foundation.
Listed below are breeds of sheep wool that are particularly good for felting, and by that we mean wet felting. Nearly any breed will needle felt.
Cormo, Corriedale, Finn, Gotland, Icelandic, Jacob, Lincoln, Merino, Polwarth, Rambouillet, Romney, Scottish Blackface, Targhee.
Also suitable are Merino/silk blends, or other blends where the wool is up around 75 to 80%. The non-felting fibre gets trapped by the wool and behaves nicely.
Embellishments refers to fibres that needle felters use on the top layer to “decorate” the project, and wet felters sometimes blend these with wool first before wet felting, though many things will adhere to the wool just resting on top. Spinners use some of these for blending into batts using a drum carder, hand cards or a blending board.
We have all kinds of things in other categories that can be used in combination with wool for felting or spinning, take a look under our silk listings, under Angelina & Sparkle-On for starters.
