Introduction to Spinning - March 9, 16, 23 3-sessions

Instructor: Alan McLean, John Valleau

THREE SATURDAYS (6 hours total), 10am to 12 noon: March 9, 16 and 23

Room for 6 students maximum. Participants should either have a functioning modern spinning wheel or a mid-weight top-whorl drop spindle. If you do not know if your wheel works, please arrange a time to bring it to the store a few weeks ahead of the course, in case you need parts, bobbins, etc.! We may be able to rent an Ashford Joy if one is available, please inquire. We can help you select an appropriate drop spindle from our selection in stock.

Spinning your own yarn can be a lot of fun and very creative, but there is a learning curve to get through and this class is designed to help provide you with the basic skills to get you off and running.

Each week you will learn some new things then have time to go home and practice.

- Getting to know your wheel/spindle.
- It's about "twist".
- Spinning singles.

- Plying your yarn.
- It's still about "twist".
- Making a balanced yarn.

Session 3:
- Finishing your handspun.
- Where do we go from here?
- Other topics that come up as students learn more skills and want to learn specific techniques.

Materials additional: fibre suited for beginners, approximately $20 to $30 depending how much spinning you decide to tackle. If you have a stash, bring along some Corriedale roving/top or a longwool breed such as Blue-faced Leicester.

NOTE: no refund for cancellations within two weeks of the workshop.
